Imperial was first produced in the 1920s in Haro, Rioja, and has since become one of the region’s most recognised historic wines. Its name originates from the Imperial Pint bottles that were originally used for exports to the English market.

Over the decades, Imperial developed its own identity through a focus on carefully selected vineyards in Rioja Alta and the production of Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. Its wines are made only in selected vintages and are traditionally matured in barrel and bottle before release.

A defining moment in Imperial’s history came when the 2004 Imperial Gran Reserva was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2013, becoming the first Spanish wine to receive the distinction.
Today, Imperial continues to represent a long tradition of Rioja winemaking, with an emphasis on vineyard selection, ageing and the character of Rioja Alta.
