The Primitivo grape variety is native to the southern region of Italy, particularly the Apulia (Puglia) region. Its name, "Primitivo," is derived from the Italian word "primo," meaning "first," which refers to its early ripening. The grape is genetically identical to Zinfandel, a well-known variety in California

Primitivo grapes produce deeply coloured wines rich in flavour and high in alcohol. The wines are typically robust and full-bodied, with a flavour profile that includes blackberries, plums, cherries, and a characteristic spiciness often likened to black pepper or anise. The tannins can be bold but generally well-integrated, making the wine smooth yet structured. Primitivo wines can also have a hint of sweetness, especially in higher alcohol versions, due to the grape's high sugar content.
